GHG emissions and Carbon intensity
Delta Air Lines reported gross GHG emissions (Scope 1 + 2 before carbon offsets) for the twelve months ending 31 December 2021 at 24,807 Kt (+7,358/+42% y-o-y). Carbon intensity also surged to 1,021 t (+220/+28% y-o-y).
Delta Air Lines's Scope 3 emissions decreased sharply to 246 Kt (
The company has not set a company-wide target for an absolute reduction in GHG emissions yet.
Delta Air Lines achieved carbon neutrality across its operations (Scope 1 + 2) in 2020. Companies normally become carbon neutral with the help of the acquisition of carbon offsets rather than absolute reductions in their own greenhouse emissions. Also, carbon neutrality does not include non-CO2 GHG emissions.
Delta Air Lines also has a science-based goal that, however, does not appear to explicitly target a company-wide reduction in emissions in absolute terms. Delta Air Lines commits to reduce well-to-wake scope 1 and 3 jet fuel GHG emissions 45% per revenue tonne kilometer by 2035 from a 2019 base year.* *Non-CO2e effects which may also contribute to aviation induced warming are not included in this target. Delta Air Lines commits to report publicly on its collaboration with stakeholders to improve understanding of opportunities to mitigate the non-CO2e impacts of aviation annually over its target timeframe.
