S&P 500: operational GHG emisssions
The companies of S&P 500 emitted the total of 1,618,402 Kt in GHG emissions (Scope 1 + 2) for the last reporting period of FY2021 (or 5,341 Kt if calculated as a weighted-average). The biggest emiiters were ExxonMobil (XOM), Southern Company (SO), Duke Energy (DUK), Chevron Corp (CVX), American Electric Power (AEP).
Most companies managed to reduce their annual emissions in absolute terms compared to the previous year (coloured green on the chart below), but some major emitters (e.g. United Airlines (UAL), Southern Company (SO), American Electric Power (AEP)) did see an increase in their carbon footprint (coloured red on the chart).
