GHG emissions and Carbon intensity
Compass Group plc reported Total CO2e Emissions - Location-Based Scope 1 + Scope 2 for the twelve months ending 30 September 2021 at 127 Kt (-19 /-12.9% y-o-y). Also positively, carbon intensity decreased to 5.5 t (-0.4 /-6.8% y-o-y).
Compass Group plc's Scope 3 emissions remained unchnaged at 12,177 Kt.
The company is committed to achieving carbon neutrality for Scope 1 + 2 by 2030, which translates into the estimated reduction of -14 Kt per annum over the period of FY2022 - FY2030. This target, however, has not been recognised as science-based (and as aligned with Paris Agreement) by the SBTi.
Also, the company commits to achieving net zero for all Scopes by 2050, which translates into the estimated reduction of -411 Kt per annum over the period of FY2021 - FY2050. This target, however, has not been recognised as science-based (and as aligned with Paris Agreement) by the SBTi.
Compass Group plc aims to achive carbon neutrality across its operations (Scope 1 + 2) in 2030. Companies normally become carbon neutral with the help of the acquisition of carbon offsets rather than absolute reductions in their own greenhouse emissions. Also, carbon neutrality does not include non-CO2 GHG emissions.
Compass Group plc also has a science-based goal that, however, does not appear to explicitly target a company-wide reduction in emissions in absolute terms. Compass Group PLC commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 46.2% by 2030 from a 2019 base year. Compass Group PLC also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services by 28% within the same timeframe.
